First official movie trailer for Gloria del Pacifico

So, after making a bit of room in this tight schedule to deliver the film on time for the premiere on November 6, I edited the first official trailer for Gloria del Pacífico. For many close friends and acquaintances, I showed around a first teaser/trailer since first half of 2011 and to them some footage here will be familiar, but this time I spliced in some newer stuff.

The second official trailer will be released close to the premiere. Probably by the end of October.

6:58am and I finally finished it and posted it here.

Now back to work. Think I'll just keep on going straight without sleep. Not tired yet.

VERY excited to release to the wide world the first trailer!!

Ballroom gala scene: Timotea Vernal's dreams

Preparing these last weeks for one of the last "connecting scenes" or "pickup shots" -whatever you call it- and it has finally arrived.

This last thrusday and friday, we shot a connecting scene of one of Timotea Vernal flashbacks and another Alfonso Ugarte flashback with his mother Rosa Vernal.

Small scene onscreen but quite heavy production-wise for we had to gather mostly light-skin people with the actors as it was a high-class ballroom gala party in Iquique thrown by the governor. Back in the XIX century, class differences were quite marked specially in race and skin color so the historical accuracy demanded it.

Props and stuff were brought in and all the women's wardrobe done in the past months were used. Looked awesome onscreen! The male wardrobe was rented. Planned to make them too but if it was just gonna be used for these scene, it wasn't worth the expense.

Lighting the scene was quite tricky as -not being a built set but an old house- we couldn't hide very well the light stands so some shots need rotoscopy to delete them digitally. Another pain in the ass, but....there was no other way around it. No rigging was allowed in the ceiling for the house is protected (its a landmark building).

Expected to start filming by 11am, we ended up shooting around 4pm...way much late than expected as hairdos and makeup of all extras and actors took quite longer. Even with many make-up artists onset. Also, women were the most time-consuming, as petticoats, undergarments, collars, hair-locks, bags, gloves and hand fans required much assisting. Regardless, the scenes ended up looking beautiful.

Gloria del Pacifico film score sessions

A new year. A new set of 365 days to do much more for everyone and for oneself. Family time was interrupted by a slight swell in the throat only to develop in a full flu near new year's eve. Just coming out of this nasty illness today.

Today was the 5th day of Gloria del Pacifico's film score recording sessions. Micky Tejada's music captures close emotions to what I want to portray in the film. Sometimes it takes time for a musician to understand you but he was quick to pick up what was needed. Specially now that time is truly a matter. Really need to rush this out and finish the film post-production process for the music was the last thing that was holding me back.

After first recordings of timbale drums and percussion, tuba and trombone sessions were covered today. Hot in here like hell but the sound was super cool. We are simply doubling certain parts to make them sound like a full orchestra (overdubs) because budget doesn't allow contracting 120 musicians at the same time. Done overdubs back in the 90's when I used to record my rock band Alter Ego so this isn't new but quite a familiar technique.

I'm very excited about how all is developing. Can't wait to see this finally done and mixed with the film's images.

Honored

November 27, Infantry Day and there was a special ceremony held at the Infantry Legion attended by many officers and ex Commander-in-Chief's as well as a representative of the one in office now.

Was invited to showcase parts of the film and I feel joy to be decorated and honored for " Gloria del Pacifico" and how it will serve the nation. Also joined the Legion as an honorific member. Good to see many officers and former ones that have helped in a way to make this endeavor a reality.

Cuts, dissolves, fades to black....Post-production process.

Editing "Gloria del Pacifico". Been doing it for the last 2 months now and still like 5 months away from finishing it.

Many things to cover and now its the montage. Then comes the adding of visual effects, rotoscoping, digital composition, sky replacement, 3D buildings and mountains, 3D water, musical scoring, color correction, etc. A lot to do on my own but the work is worth it. Wish I could delegate some work but the editing involves the knowledge of two basic things to make it right: knowing history, knwoing the script by hand and knowing where and when things were shot for soem scenes weren't shot complete in one place but in 3 to 4 differente places and in a span of 2 years from one another in some cases.

Considering the fact of training another person to work along with me on this. Im giving it deep thoughts....

Editing "Gloria del Pacífico" and a surprise chilean visit

Began editing "Gloria del Pacifico" already. Still some 10 scenes away from total completion but have already sufficient material to start editing. Been doing it for the last 3 weeks.

I'm showing it to only a few thse first scenes and can;t hold back my joy to know its getting in shape pretty well and that it awes the viewer. Showed it also to Enrique Robles, chilean military historian who contacted me a few weeks ago because of the interview I had in the chilean newspaper La tercera and Radio Coorporación. To hear him saying that its superior to what's been done in his own country really sparks a sense of sane achievement, specially knwoing that its been made without any government support nor outside invesment but only my own pocket. Putting heart, soul and life into this has cost me my own health even so....its starting to pay in the end little by little.

Vicente and Juan Diego's final scenes

Wrapping up the last parts of the war survivor scenes with Reynaldo, Pold and Flor de Maria. I am greatful to Raul Zambrano and family for lending his beautiful turn-of-the-century house for the shots. This is the third time with Pold, fourth time with Reynaldo and first with Flor de Maria. Pleasure working with them. Always nailing it.

This time we finally used that old trunk I bought at the Surquillo antique/flea market back in 2011. While looking for old stuff for these scenes I stumbled across the trunk and saw it as a perfect prop for Vicente's memories placement. Beautiful one. Pricey but worth every cent. At the cachina I got myself after much searching some very old newspapers dating from the very early years of the XX century up until 1929, specially the ones that talked about the Plebiscito, the Tacna and Arica situation and the "chilenización" that took place in those decades after the war.

Beautiful old trunk. Perfect for Vicente's memories.
Newspapers from the Tacna captivity decades. This dates to 1911.
A thorough search worth every penny.
After two and half weeks staying there and being close to all those amazing places that Barranco offers is such a gorgeous experience, specially knowing it was a war zone back in early 1881. Much of the houses similar to this one were burnt down in the big fire after the Lima siege. Raul lives there almost since he was born in the late 60's but his family lived there even longer and he was telling us all those stories his grandfather said about the house and the backyard specially. The backyard consists of a wooden pergola surrounded by dry old soil covered with fallen leaves that drop from creepy looking fig trees. We were all waiting at night when there was time for some relax and beers for some gnomes to appear as the tales go. Funny stuff. His grandfather also mentioned something about a big hole in the back where many old rifles and tunnels connecting to the side houses were found during some gardening many decades ago. The rifles were from the war and were put there with silverware and precious stuff the owners hid as the chilean soldiers ransacked it all.
Being an old neighborhood, Barranco is not only a sight to see but also a plethora of stories and old tales from the war.

Coming home now. Feeling a bit stuffy and have runny nose. Seems like a big cold is about to come.
